Grocery Shopping for Three

I admit, I was surprised to find that my grocery list has changed so much now that I’m shopping for me and two teenagers instead of my husband, me and two teenagers. Some things I could sort of predict but other things I’m still struggling to understand. How can I need half as much butter when there is still three quarters of the family living together? Why do I only need a small jar of vegemite a month instead of a large jar? We all like vegemite, OK so I don’t eat it because it’s not gluten free but I didn’t before we separated either. Why do we need more milk when the person who moved out doesn’t drink milk. These are mysteries and will probably remain so but they are a timely reminder that it is important to check what you have on hand before making your shopping list. I tend to shop on autopilot because I’ve been doing it for so long and our shopping list doesn’t change much from week to week, fortunately we decided to try shopping fortnightly or we’d be swimming in butter by now because I know we need one lot of butter for everyday use and one lot of butter for baking every week. Well, no, not any more. Now a pack of butter lasts a fortnight and I don’t need to bake as often because there are biscuits left at the end of the week, actually I just ate the last biscuit from the batch I baked six weeks ago. Need to make more on Monday but probably not the following Monday.

So the moral of the story for today, check the cupboards and fridge, then shop.
