Last month my Aunt was admitted to hospital after a fall and my mother has asked that the hospital keep her until she is more mobile. We hadn’t seen her for three months because of my husband’s breakdown and we could see a definite deterioration in her. Now, a month later she is in respite care and hopefully learning to walk around a bit more steadily. She tends to go to bed for an afternoon nap and stay there until they drag her out for tea so I have my doubts about her mobility increasing very much. Apparently her dementia is progressing much faster than it had been because she doesn’t really remember why she is in care and often doesn’t remember that people have visited her. The physical therapists said that she was freezing during tasks like brushing her teeth and speaking gibberish but recognising that the words are not right which she told us is often a sign that the dementia is progressing.<\/p>\n

This last week my mother and aunts’ cousin died. She had been in a nursing home for much of this year after having a guardian and administrator appointed at the start of the year. She was enjoying being cared for having spent most of her life caring for herself and others. The week before she died she had been taken to hospital following two suspected heart attacks but she had been home and enjoying seeing her new friends. On Monday she decided to go to bed early. The nurse helped her to bed and massaged her legs and she drifted off to sleep and never woke up. This seems to me an almost perfect end to a fairly long life. She was 88. So this week has been spent trying to help my brother organise her funeral as he is in the UK and I am saddened by the little that all of us really know about her.<\/p>\n

So, with the funeral organised for next Thursday, and my brother responsible for everything else as executor, our little family is off celebrating my niece’s 15th birthday. She’s finally caught up to Casper, for three months, anyway! We were supposed to be camping but it’s been raining for two days already and not supposed to get finer so we’re going to their local swimming pool instead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
